The negative consequence of this system is that because profitability is directly related to the cost of resident care, there is no financial incentive to provide care that goes beyond the amount reimbursable by Medicaid. This drive to save money in order to increase profitability encourages poor maintenance and cutbacks on essential medical supplies.
