Types of Burns (Severity)
Serving Throughout the Great State of Texas
First-Degree Burns
This is the mildest type of burn. This burn produces minor swelling, redness, and pain. The skin is dry and does not have blisters. Placing the burn under cool running water can help reduce the pain. It is recommended to do this until the burning feeling leaves. Most doctors do not recommend putting products, bandages, or butter on burns, as doing so could make the burn worse.
Second-Degree Burns
This burn involves the skin layers underneath the top layer. These burns produce blisters, redness, and severe pain. The blisters sometimes break open with a wet looking area.
Third-Degree Burns
This burn is the most serious type of burn and it involves all the layers of the skin. The surface appears dry and can look waxy white, leathery brown, or charred. There may not be much pain at first due to nerve damage. As the burn heals, there will be permanent scarring.
